Scholarships for Local students

One of the main activities of the Ministry of Higher Education is providing opportunities for the Sri Lankans to follow Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in various fields in foreign countries. In the selection of candidates, to have openness and transparency, as well as selecting the best applicants, applications are called through an advertisement, which is published on the website of the Ministry. Qualified applicants are interviewed by a panel of experienced University Lecturers. Selected best applicants are nominated for the final selection which is done by the respective scholarship agency.

Foreign scholarships offered through the Ministry of Higher Education

The  Foreign countries offer undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships through the Ministry of Higher Education for Sri Lankans to study in their countries annually.

Approximate time periods of advertising Undergraduate scholarships for publishing the application for scholarships is given below. 

Loan Schemes

  • Laptop loan scheme

The Ministry of Education has an initiative on providing loan facilities for students pursuing their higher studies. Click here for the procedure and the guide to purchase the laptop through the scheme 

  • Interest-Free Student Loan Scheme for Selected Degree Programs academic Years – 2021/2022  (GCE AL Examination-2018,2019,2020)

This is an Interest-Free Loan, granted to the students who have qualified in G.C.E (A/L) but have not been selected to a State University based on the Z-score to follow a Degree offered by Non-State Higher Education Institutes recognized by the Ministry of Education / University Grants Commission.

  • HORIZON College of Business and Technology Ltd – HORIZON
  • KAATSU Highly Advanced Medical Technology Training Centre – KIU
  • SLT Campus (Pvt) Ltd – SLTC
  • SAEGIS Campus (Pvt) Ltd- SAEGIS
  • Aquinas College of Higher Studies- AQUINAS
  • Esoft Metro Campus- ESOFT
  • Institute of Chemistry Ceylon –ICHEM
  • International College of Business Technology – ICBT
  • Benadict XVI Catholic Institute – BCI
