Project Beyond the Pearl is a creative initiative organized by the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya, aimed at promoting Sri Lanka’s tourism through media and storytelling. The project consists of three phases, each designed to highlight the country’s culture, heritage, and travel experiences.
- The first phase, “Chronicles Beyond the Pearl,” focused on social media. Rather than simply showcasing tourist sites, we highlighted Sri Lanka’s culture by sharing stories about traditions, food, festivals, and heritage. These posts encouraged audiences to understand the significance behind what they saw, fostering deeper engagement and connection.
- The second phase was the development of a digital tourism magazine. For this purpose, we collected content such as travel stories, photos, and experiences from different contributors, including youth and travel enthusiasts. All these were organized into a well-structured and visually appealing magazine. This phase was important because it created a long-term platform where people can explore Sri Lanka in a more detailed and engaging way compared to social media posts.
- The third phase was the Cultural Tourism Experience Exhibition, which brought everything into a real-world setting. This event allowed people to experience Sri Lankan culture directly through food, crafts, traditions, and interactive activities. It also created a great opportunity to capture media content while engaging both local and foreign audiences.
Overall, Project Beyond the Pearl combines digital platforms and physical experiences to promote Sri Lanka in a more meaningful way. By using storytelling and creativity, the project highlights not just places but the true identity and culture of the country.
